This Wednesday, August 26th is our third and final installment on the theme of healing grace.  Following God and Christ, divine Science is the third part of what Mary Baker Eddy spiritually translated as the trinity: “God the Father-Mother; Christ the spiritual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter” (Science and Health 331:30).  So what role does divine Science play in the achievement of healing?

In the Bible, the Holy Ghost (or Comforter) is first mentioned in Matthew’s Gospel at the birth of Jesus where it says “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.”  Divine Science was giving birth to a “new-old idea,” as Mary Baker Eddy says in reference to the coming of the Christ.  This birth was wholly spiritual, and as such it superseded the need for material conception, and resulted in the virgin birth.  In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Eddy defines the Holy Ghost as “the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love.”  So divine Science is forever developing it’s ideas (all of us) just as it did in the birth of Jesus, bringing into being the perfect, eternal creation of God.  In doing so, this development allows us to heal spiritually.
