From Facebook feeds to virtual reality gaming systems, there doesn’t seem to be an end to the number of ways we try to create our own digital worlds. But for all of our technological advances, are we getting any closer to understanding reality? The question of what is real has been asked by countless philosophers and scientists throughout the ages, and many have looked for answers in human consciousness and the far reaches of the universe. Modern advances in fields such as quantum physics have pointed to the fact that the material universe can change simply by changing our perception of it. In this way, what we thought was the fixed nature of physical reality is actually malleable, like virtual reality.
Can we rely on the physical world for a true understanding of reality? And if not, where do we look to discover what is real? Jesus was not one to take the physical world at face value. He once said “if you had faith as small as a mustard seed you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” He was speaking of an unwavering faith in God, the omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient principle governing all of creation. Not only did Jesus make these revealing declarations about the nature of God, he was able to prove the truth behind them when he healed people of countless physical ailments. In the verses leading up to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, it says that he healed all manner of sickness and disease.
Jesus was able to heal without the aid of material medicine because he saw the spiritual reality of man: that man is spiritual, not material. Because man is spiritual, it is his primary, spiritual nature which governs his life, not the laws of matter. Spirit cannot be sick, it cannot be diseased, so man cannot be sick or carry a disease. Jesus’ understanding of this was so strong that his prayer had an instantaneous healing effect. He demonstrated man’s spiritual reality for all of mankind, and gave us a framework in which to live it and demonstrate it ourselves today.
