Organist Auditions

Third Church of Christ, Scientist in New York City is holding auditions to find a permanent organist to play for our Sunday and Wednesday services.  Below is a brief job description:
  • Perform the following for weekly Wednesday Evening Meetings (7:30-8:30pm):
    • Arrive one hour before the beginning of the service
    • Prelude 9-10 minutes before the service
    • Accompany three hymns chosen by the First Reader
    • Postlude 6-7 minutes following the service
  • Perform the following for weekly Sunday Morning Services (11:00am-12:00pm):
    • Arrive one hour before the beginning of the service and rehearse with the soloist (vocal)
    • Prelude 9-10 minutes before the service
    • Accompany three hymns chosen by the First Reader
    • Accompany one vocal solo chosen by the soloist
    • Offertory 2-3 minutes during collection
    • Postlude 6-7 minutes following the service
  • Is responsible for choosing music of an appropriate character for all Preludes, Postludes, and Offertory which demonstrates a wide dynamic range
  • Will be asked to perform before and after periodic lectures
  • The organist must be a proficient accompanist, be able to play piano on occasion, and be comfortable with sight reading and learning new material chosen by the music committee

As an applicant, you must first pass the preliminary audtion. Then you will be asked to play for services on a trial basis before a final decision is made. Compensation is competitive with other New York City congregations and is commensurate with experience.
