All are welcome to join our Group Bible Study as we continue our deep dive into Acts of the Apostles. This Sunday, November 22nd at 1:00pm, we will be reading and discussing chapters 20 and 21.
These chapters contain amazing stories of the Holy Spirit working through Paul and the disciples. One of the most striking is the story of Eutychus in chapter 20. When Paul arrived at Troas, everyone was excited. Paul had passed through there on his way to modern day Greece, and word of the magnificent works done on his journey certainly would have come back to the people. After breaking bread with Paul, everyone stayed up late into the night listening to all that he had to say. One of the listeners was the young Eutychus who was perched in a windowsill. As the night drew on longer and longer, Eutychus’ eyelids grew heavy and he fell into a deep sleep. Soon he tumbled down from the third story window, and fell to his death.
Paul sprang into action, throwing himself on the young man. He declared with certainty “Don’t be alarmed, he’s alive!” As soon as he said this Eutychus was alive again and the people took him home. How did Paul do this? Paul knew the truth about Eutychus’ life, that it isn’t a material life that he was bound to one day lose. Paul knew that life itself was and is eternal. This is the great fact that Jesus demonstrated in the resurrection, that the death of the material body is not death at all, that life continues after this seeming change called death.
Paul declared this truth aloud when he said “he’s alive!” But even more importantly, Paul was knowing this truth in his heart, putting his entire faith in Jesus’ demonstration. He was following the master’s command when he said “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8). These words of Jesus are a promise to all of us that we can do these things.
We hope you can join us and learn from these powerful examples of healing in Acts. If you’re not in the New York area and would like to join on the phone or online, read below for instructions:
