Church Service Sun. 12/8

God the Only Cause and Creator 12.08.13When Sir Isaac Newton sat under the fabled apple tree, he deduced by observing an apple falling to earth that there was a cause and effect at work.  From his observations he discovered the law of gravity which led to the development of Newtonian Physics.  While most of us are not physicists, we can still appreciate the relationship of our actions to a desired (or undesired) result.  If we put in a week of hard work at the office, we are rewarded with a paycheck.  If we are honest with a friend about some of their less desirable traits, we might find that they don’t answer the phone as often.  For every action there is a reaction.

What we don’t often stop to consider, however, is the source of these actions and causes.  Driving down the street or riding the subway does not require us to understand the laws of thermodynamics, even though we are availing ourselves of these laws.  Spiritual thinkers throughout the centuries have looked beyond their material surroundings and discovered that there is a principle at work behind everything that our five senses experience, ordering the way atoms and molecules behave, and even directing the actions we take.  In the same way that we can travel unimaginable distances by stepping on a plane and putting our faith into the laws governing flight, when we put our faith in Divine Principle, things which before seemed impossible become possible.

Jesus put this Divine Principle into action when he walked on water, healed the sick, and raised the dead.  He also taught that we can do the same.  In Matthew 17:20 Jesus says to his disciples “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”

This Sunday, December 8th, the Christian Science Bible Lesson explores the topic “God the Only Cause and Creator.”  In church we’ll read more about the Scientific discoveries made by the writers of the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Christian Science Textbook.  Come join us for our 11am service, we would love to see you there!
