Sunday Morning Church 3/15

Substance 9.15.13Anyone walking into a supermarket today is bombarded by new terms about food.  Is it organic?  All-natural? Energy boosting or antioxidant?  In Christian Science we learn that the question isn’t which food should we eat or not eat, it’s what is real substance?  The subject of this week’s Christian Science weekly Bible Lesson addresses this issue head on.  The lesson takes a look at the concept of substance from a spiritual standpoint.

The Bible gives us many illustrations of what true substance is, and how it is expressed in our lives.  When Daniel and his friends were taken captive by the Chaldeans, they were steadfast in their faith that their health came from God.  Denying any of the King’s meat or wine for nourishment, Daniel and the children of Judah ate only pulse (the edible seeds of various crops like the peas, beans, and lentils pictured above) and drank only water.  After ten days on this diet, the Israelite children appeared physically stronger that those who ate the king’s meat and wiser than any of the magicians and astrologers in the king’s realm.

Was it the seeds, peas, and lentils that strengthened these children? No, it was their understanding that their health did not come from material food, it came from Spirit, God.  Join us this Sunday, March 15th at 11am for more stories and teachings from the Bible, as well as readings from the Christian Science textbook that serve to illuminate the true meaning of substance.
