Testimony Meeting 6/3

Do you ever feel that you’re not living up to your full potential? Or like life just isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? It can be tempting to try and find a shortcut, the fastest way to instant gratification, but this often disappoints and leaves us feeling empty.  How do we get the most out of life? How can we live more abundantly?

In the book of Genesis we read about twin brothers, Jacob and Esau, who took two very different paths in life.  These two were competing since birth for their fathers’ blessing, the sure fire way toward gaining great resources and standing in the community.  The brothers coveted this right so much that Jacob took advantage of Esau’s weakness one day, convincing him to sell him his birthright when he was famished in exchange for food.  Jacob then also tricked their father into bestowing his blessing upon him by impersonating Esau.

All of this manipulation and deception was meant to give Jacob an easy ride in life.  He was seeking material means to gain abundance in his life, but it ended up forcing him into exile.  Jacob had to leave behind his inheritance and go into hiding.  In the meantime, Esau did receive the abundant birth right that Jacob tried to take from him.  All of their fathers’ land and livestock was generously bestowed upon him.

After leaving his home, Jacob became a servant to a distant relative in a far off land.  At this time he started his life over, doing his work honestly, and relying on God, Divine Principle, to show him the way.  By doing this Jacob received his reward, not from his material father Isaac, but from his heavenly Father.  Jacob’s wealth increased to the point where he could strike out on his own and return to his homeland.  When Jacob stopped trying to force his way ahead by material means and instead relied on honesty and listening for Divine guidance, his life became just as abundant as his brothers’, and both siblings were able to coexist in peace.
